SPRINGFIELD- To enhance access to voter registration, State Senator Ram Villivalam is leading the charge on a measure that aims to centralize the process at driver services facilities in Illinois.

“Streamlining the voter registration process will continue to make sure that voting is accessible for all citizens,” said Villivalam (D-Chicago). “By expanding the automatic voter registration process, many will now be eligible to vote in a simple step.”

Currently, Secretary of State driver services facilities have a front-end voter registration system in place, which allows customers to decline registering to vote or updating their existing registration during a DMV transaction.

Villivalam’s measure would create a dual-purpose voter registration system. Under the legislation, a transaction at a driver services facility would also serve as a dual-purpose voter registration application when adults present valid proof of citizenship with documents such as a passport. After the transaction, the customer’s information would automatically be passed to the State Board of Elections. If the individual is eligible to vote, the agency would complete the application and send notice to the individual allowing them to decline the registration.

“When you go to a DMV, you are already going in with the necessary documents for registration,” said Villivalam. “Instituting this system will ensure an efficient experience and accessibility for people seeking services at these facilities.”

Senate Bill 496 passed the Senate on Thursday and heads to the House for further consideration.
